ICBAS - Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas de Abel Salazar da universidade do Porto
The Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS) was established in 1975. Is a faculty of the University of Porto, the biggest University in the North of Portugal, and one of the 2 biggest Portuguse Universities. ICBAS is a teaching and research institution in the fields of human health, applied biology, environment, veterinary sciences, food security and quality control. ICBAS currently offers 2 undergraduate, 3 integrated masters (Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Bioengineering), 9 master (e.g. Marine Sciences, Environmental Toxicology and Contamination) and 18 PhD programmes (e.g. Marine and Environmental Sciences; Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, Medicine, Veterinary Sciences), and several specialisation courses. Many ICBAS professors are active members of leading research institutions such as CIIMAR, IBMC and IPATIMUP. ICBAS currently occupies new facilities along with the Faculty of Pharmacy, and is a central institution in the health pool that also includes the Central Hospital of Porto, Julio Dinis Maternity and the Hospital Maria Pia. The facilities consist in 41000m2 of covered area with 11 auditoria and more than 25000m2 of laboratories fully equipped with the latest technology. The library is very well stocked with books and journals in all areas of science. ICBAS has been involved in more than 200 research projects. At the present ICBAS is responsible for 49 research projects, 48 are financed by the COMPETE Programme and 1 by the Atlantic Area, and has a very high publication rate at international level.
